In 1978, Kyoshi or “Master Teacher” Dave Kovar opened his first school with a vision to empower people by teaching martial arts on a completely different level than could be found anywhere else. His brother Tim, who brought innovative business practice to the operation, soon joined him.
The brothers’ reputation for combining self-defense and life skills grew. As the word spread, the Kovar’s opened new locations, garnered awards, earned prestigious industry accolades, and gained national recognition.
Satori means to be “in the moment, at your best” in Japanese. And this is exactly what Kovar’s is all about. So we added Satori to our name to embody the spirit of Satori: Indomitable Spirit, Generosity, Experiential, Teamwork, Community, and Growth. Never static, Kyoshi and his team continue to innovate and grow the various aspects of Kovar’s to develop its curriculum and outreach.
Kovar’s curriculum is a unique blend of different martial arts styles that place a strong emphasis on valuable life skills.
Through high quality martial arts instruction, we empower people of all ages to achieve their full potential.
By emphasizing self-defense, health, fitness and life skills in a friendly, safe, positive environment, we inspire our students to become more confident, successful, contributing members of our community.
Our Student Creed
I intend to develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that would reduce my mental growth or my physical health.
I intend to develop self-discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.
I intend to use what I learn in class constructively and defensively, to help myself and others, and never be abusive or offensive.
Principles of Black Belt
As a dedicated student of the martial arts, I will live by the principles of Black Belt:
